We had to take my car to the shop near Jamaica-hill.  Instead of one of us having to sit there for 3 hours, I suggested we take two cars and go explore the new IKEA.  Galahad was getting over a flu-type virus, so I offered to let him stay home, but he insisted on staying with the plan.  I have one word to describe that IKEA experience.  Wow!  It was set up as Disney for adults.  There were at least 20 people just outside directing traffic and telling us where to park.  Then, we were greeted at the door with a smile and a map.  Holy shit, that place is HUGE!  Of course, me being me, we needed to go straight to the restaurant.  It had been two hours since breakfast, and I was starving.  :)  I ordered gravlax, and he got the Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce.  Omg, so yummy!  With full bellies, it was off to browse and kill some time before my car was ready.

Being the organized person I am, I left my cell number with the shop in case of emergencies arising.  However, I completely underestimated Swedish planning since it seems they built that store like a bunker.  No cell phone signal to be had anywhere in the giant store.  I didn't realize this for a couple of hours though as we were completely engrossed in the whole experience.  We ended up spending over $200 on little things, and enjoyed the experience immensely.  I ran half a mile to get outside for a cell signal and found that everything was copacetic.  Those Jamaicans are awesome!

Once we picked up the car, we made a quick stop to get some beef patties & coco bread.  Mmmmm.

For the past few weeks, Kitten has been fighting with a neighbor cat and getting chased home.  :(  She's been so depressed and barely wanting to go outside.  Today, finally, she seemed upbeat and wanted to stay out longer.  I'm not sure where the neighbor cat is, but maybe he's giving her space now that we chased him away with water pistols.  Yes, I feel like a jerk cuz he's a very sweet cat, but Kitten has a right to feel territorial at least in her own yard.  Yesterday, there were 2 raccoons battling it out (or maybe playing) next door, so I made her come inside while they were still awake.  When I tried to get pictures, I scared them away somehow, so she was able to go outside for an hour or so.

We drove with Galahad's parents up to Daytona Beach to visit with friends of theirs for Thanksgiving.  They have a gorgeous Old Florida house on the Intracoastal Waterway.  This was the first time since I can't remember when that I haven't spent the holiday with my family, too.  Galahad's dad has Alzheimer's and is not doing so great, so it was nice to spend some time with him while we can.  I had forgotten exactly how much that wears on my patience when one encounters it for days at a time.  It definitely is easier to cope this time than it was watching my mom go through it, but it still sucks pretty bad.  :(

Don't laugh, but we decided to try a NASCAR race today.  Okay laugh away.  We did.  :)  We must have made a hundred Talladega Nights jokes.  Galahad had a friend who was going so we went along for the experience.  Wow, talk about culture shock.  We certainly walked into the Deep South when we entered the Speedway.  It's definitely not as boring as watching it on TV even though they really are just driving in circles.  It's not Formula One, but it was fun to experience.

Today was a trip back to normal folk in Pennsylvania.  No South Florida fakeness.  No Big City Chill.  Of course we started the day off in a cute little coffee shop that had egg and cheese bagel sammiches!  From there we wandered through a little craft fair and bought some soy candles amongst much laughing and horsing around.  Then, it was off to the Tea House for 2nd breakfast.  :)  Mostly, it was a relaxing day of lounging about and nibbling on Di Palo's tidbits.

Galahad and I flew up to NYC yesterday to see a friend and to see the sights.  On my list of where I wanted to go was Veselka.   Fabulicious!!  Apparently quite a few other people had the same idea as it was much more crowded than last time (7 years ago or so :p).  We also journeyed across the street to the chocolate place.  This was definitely turning into an eating vacation.  :)  From there, we ventured to Little Italy and Di Palo's.  Omg yum!  We tasted so many different meats & cheeses, bought a bunch for our trip to Pennsylvania, and started to head out.  We ended up walking for miles today, but the memorable parts were the meals.  :)

Galahad took apart the bathroom cabinet last night after the rat failed to get stuck in the trap we set the night before.  Turns out it was still very much alive and hiding back in a corner that we couldn't get to.  He set the trap again last night, and it fell for it.  Yick!  But at least we won't have the smell of a dead animal in the wall.

Kitten was tricksy today.  She meowed to come back inside, and I thought she was missing me again, so I let her in without first checking to see what she had.  Turns out she had an almost dead baby rat.  Ewwwww.  I spent 20 minutes yelling at her and chasing that fkn thing around until she finally lost it in the bathroom inside a cabinet that somehow had a baby-rat-sized hole in it.  Oh yeah, and she lost her new red collar today, too.  They seem to have a two week limit.

Kitten was sooooo happy to see us last night -- although I think I missed her as much as she missed us.  She hasn't let me out of her sight for more than 3 seconds since we came home.  After that, she starts pitifully mewing.  Even though she hadn't been outside while we were gone, she didn't want to stay out today either.  She came back every 5 minutes, and finally gave up after the 6th time or so.

Time to fly home and see Kitten!!  =)

One of my brothers missed his early morning flight because they said he got there too close to the flight time, even though the airport was deserted and he could see the stairs still attached to his plane.  I blame Cheney again.  Fortunately, Galahad stayed to drop him off and was there to bring him back to our condo until the later flight.

Most of us left today and were sharing the same connecting flights.  My niece's plane to Dallas got diverted to Denver for not enough fuel before they even boarded!  Again, I blame Cheney.  His transport plane took off right before us.  Besides that, the flight home was uneventful, although I ended up going through the rest of my Imitrex supply -- 9 total for this reunion trip (which is a month's supply according to my insurance).

Sunday, September 2, 2007

Somehow, I let my family dysfunction (and the 3 day migraine) get to me.  I succumbed to my horrible Inner Child.  I lost my temper with my brother today and fkn kicked him.  Like I was a 6 year old.  I was so ashamed immediately after I did that.  I went off on my own for a bit to try to cool down, and popped another Imitrex (number 7 I think for this trip).  I came back after a mile or so hike and apologized to him.  Fortunately, he still loves me and forgave me.

Later on, we took the chair lift up the mountain to ride the Alpine Slide back down.  My sister and I were all proud of ourselves for conquering our fears (& migraines) to ride this down.  Of course two of my brothers decide to race.  I bet that the younger one would win.  Everyone else said the other would since he's bigger, and his weight would give him the advantage.  But I know that crazy always wins!  And, sure enough, he won by a comfortable lead even after wiping out on the way down.  =)

I've been dealing with a migraine and can't seem to shake it.  Other than that, I'm having a wonderful time.  Today, we went to town and then saw the rodeo at night.  One of my sisters tells me I've been to a rodeo before at age 14, but somehow I don't remember it.  This one was fun.

Friday, August, 31, 2007

What a clusterfuck yesterday was.  Everyone's planes were all messed up, and my dad missed his connection, thereby spending the night in Atlanta since it was the last one of the night.  I felt completely guilty that I wasn't able to persuade them to hold our plane another 15 minutes for him.  It was all touch & go for about 90 minutes.  They said he would make it, then not, then he would, etc.  His plane got diverted to Knoxville since Atlanta had to close for storms, and they started running out of gas whilst circling.  I suppose the good news is that they noticed they were low on fuel before they crashed.   Apparently the VP of the US flew in to Jackson, Wyoming last night, and the airport was completely locked down.  That's why they wouldn't let us come in too late since a curfew was in effect.

It's wonderful seeing everyone!  A bunch of us decided to go to the Grand Tetons to hike.  This worked out well as I was able to spend some time chatting with a few people here & there along the trail as we got strung along.  We would catch up with each other at moose sightings.  And then there was the Great River Crossing.  One of my brothers decided to cross it on a fallen log 15 feet above the white water & slippery rocks.  That prompted Galahad to cross the slippery rocks and then rock climb up the other side.  Which prompted my next brother to cross on the fallen log, too.  My 9 year old niece was begging her mom to do that, too, but alas, she had to cross on the lower log downstream in the calm section.  Of course at some point, it started to lightly rain.

This led my 15 year old nephew to ask me which way he should cross it.  Since it was a "TestFest" as my sister so aptly called it, I took his request seriously and told him that the bigger challenge was to cross the slippery rocks and rock-climb up the other side.  He's very big into martial arts, so I thought following his martial-arts-uncle's path was apropos also.  Galahad was very good about coaching him across, telling him where to place his feet, and what to hold onto.  It was somewhat amusing to see other tourists gathering around on the other side (the trail eventually winds that way) asking if this was a rescue mission.  He did make it successfully with no serious injuries, just some wet feet and blisters.

At the top of the mountain, I couldn't take it anymore and called my neighbor to see how Kitten was.  ;)  She said she was fine but lonely.  :(

We left today to go to my family reunion, of which I have mixed feelings.  On the one hand, I'm excited to see everyone; on the other hand, my family doesn't always do well when we're all together.  There are one or two instigators, and then eventually most of us fall back into childhood dysfunctional behavior, which I detest (especially when I do it).  :(

Plus, I'm going to miss Kitten like crazy!!! :((((

Sunday, August 19, 2007

Galahad and I had such a great time at the beach today.  There were all kinds of rip currents and waves crashing.  After our morning workout, we went frolicking in the waves.  I was in about 20 seconds before I came out to put my surf shorts back on over my bikini.  After I lost my hair tie, I decided a t-shirt was in order as well.  Those waves were ripping clothes off with a vengeance.  I was holding on to Galahad's hand for dear life at times.  The times that I didn't I got sent back to shore ass over elbows.  Mostly, we were all laughing so hard that we were ingesting copious amounts of seawater.  Two of our friends saw a small shark go by, but I was still eating so I missed it.  Probably for the best.  ;)

When I got home and showered, I was pulling chunks of seaweed out of my hair.  It was almost the exact same color and blended in nicely.

I learned an interesting fact yesterday whilst helping our friends move.  They're both very pro-environment and work outdoors with native plants.  Anyway, I was lamenting about ants infesting Kitten's food this weekend.  She told me that if we had red ants in our house, that was a good sign as it meant that we didn't have termites.  Apparently red ants tear up termite nests.  Good to know!  Now, we just have to deal with the ant problem.  For now, Kitten's food is sitting in a moat.  :p  And I have 3 bites on one finger.  I don't blame them as I was drowning hordes of them.  :(

Sunday, August 12, 2007

Today we did our usual Sunday morning beach workout & subsequent picnic.  Then we had just enough time to get home, shower, grab a snack, cool off for 30 minutes, and it was off to help some dojo friends move.  They're great people who recently got married and are consolidating households.  So even though it was brutally hot in the middle of a south Florida August afternoon, we went to help them move without complaint.  That turned into a 5 hour chore, but I made sure to put myself on food detail, so I got fish tacos out of the deal.  ;)

We tried to pressure-wash our roof again this weekend.  Last weekend, the pressure washer wouldn't start.  So I called my brother (who moved to Arizona, the fkr), and had him on speaker phone to figure out the engine.  He determined last weekend that the engine had flooded (after much troubleshooting), so he said let it sit for a bit and to call him before we tried starting it again.  So we called him, woke him up (sorry!), and he got it started.  He's a genius with engines.

Seven hours later, Galahad the perfectionist finished the roof.  =)  At that point, he was too exhausted to go out as we had planned, thankfully as I was beat, too.  I was on ground detail.  I had to throw bottles of water up to him periodically, check the fuel level, and move the 200 pound machine around so the hose would reach various spots on the roof.  Obviously my job wasn't as tricky, but it still wore me out.  Plus I got filthy.  :p

Well, the collar didn't last long, exactly 2 weeks.  Kitten came home today without it.  Aren't I curious what happened??

Tuesday, August 7, 2007

After much deliberation & vacillation, I finally decided to get Kitten her rabies booster shot, even though I was mostly sure it was unnecessary (except for legal compliance).  She fought me getting into her carrier, yowled on the way there, and then sat patiently with me for 30 minutes while we waited to see the Doc.  He pulled her out roughly after I warned him that she wasn't pleased to be shoved in the carrier (which is what I finally had to do).  She yowled and hissed at him.  He weighed her, injected her, and shoved her back in within 90 seconds.  And, I was done since I had insisted that she would be getting no other booster shots.  What a racket.

Once we got home, she bolted out of her carrier, and then proceeded to come back and play in it for the next half hour.  :p  Fortunately, she was fine all night.  No reactions, no symptoms, which leads me to believe even more strongly how unnecessary this shot was.

We went to see Harry Potter last night since Galahad was out of town when I first saw it.  And apparently, our theater had some special deal on buying tequila, so he got very relaxed. :)  The movie was just as good the second time.  Tonight, if I have the energy after workout class and a full day, I may go to a Harry Potter Book Party.  My friend is going at 11 pm and asked me to meet her there.  When did I get old thinking that's too late to go out?  I remember when I used to start getting ready at 11 pm.

Monday, July 16, 2007

I might be stubborn.  Okay, I am; but that which does not kill me shall make me stronger, right?  Holy fuck, this may kill me.  I've had a migraine on & off (mostly on) for a week now.  They're coming on more frequently and lasting longer, although in hindsight, I'm still fortunate that the severity isn't as intense as it used to be.  Here's where the stubbornness comes in.  I refuse to go crawling back to my chiropractor every fkn week to adjust my neck.  Can't it stay adjusted ffs??

On a positive note, I had a lovely weekend in between bouts of pain.  I had sushi with my in-laws (I love them so much!), watched the new Harry Potter movie with my Sensei followed by Thai food, lounged by the pool, and read my book.

Before I could enjoy my pool time, I had to clean it first, and the Polaris pool-scrubber thingamajig had been making me crazy for weeks now.  It's so hard for me to unscrew the Quick Disconnect (ha!) in order to clean the filter.  I'd always have to wait for Galahad to get home to do it for me or open all the valves for an hour to let the pressure out.  Today, I finally had enough and gave myself an Idiot Lecture.  As I was standing in the pool to try and unsuccessfully connect it back (more leverage from inside the pool or so I thought), I had a little light bulb go off (figuratively thankfully so I wasn't electrocuted).  I decided that Google had never let me down before, and why hadn't I bothered to Google this problem yet.  In the past, Google has helped me figure out how to un-jam the coin holder in my car and how to change the special a/c filters among other things.  I jumped out of the pool, and before I had dried off, I had my answer.  Not only was it simple and easy to do, it worked brilliantly.

I bow down before the almighty Google.  Now, if only it could help me open the jar of mixed nuts that I'm jonesing for.  I tried all of the methods I knew plus some that I Googled.  I suppose I need to keep working out.  Sigh, Galahad needs to hurry up and come home.

Just watched Cocaine Cowboys yesterday.  I wasn't prepared for how much old trauma which re-surfaced in me.  On the one hand, it was a very good documentary.  On the other hand, I couldn't believe my parents kept our family there and pretended it wasn't that bad.

Monday, May 28, 2007

Our last day here and we had to catch a plane in the afternoon.  We tried to get up & get going early, but that just wasn't possible somehow. ;)  We were able to spend an hour or so at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and got to see the desert cats.  Very cool!  And then it was off to the airport and another mad dash through Dallas airport for both my sis and me.  This time, we made it with 10 minutes or so to spare.  ;)

And there was my Galahad waiting to pick me up at midnight at the airport.  And, omg did I miss my Kitten!  Apparently she missed me, too, as she gave me lots of snuggles when I got home.  =)

Sunday, May 27, 2007

Again, I was awake way too early.  This time I was quieter in the kitchen, although my sis woke up soon after with a migraine.  :(  This was one of the few times I actually got to take care of someone else's migraine.  I did all the same stuff that I want -- an ice pack that I'm too lazy (READ: the pain isn't worth the result) to get for myself, hand-delivered meds, and a glass of water.  She was so grateful even though it really isn't any effort for someone who feels okay.  We had planned to go hiking today but told her it was fine if we didn't.  She didn't want to be the person who holds everyone back, and I know that feeling well.  So, we went but took it extremely easy.  My brother didn't get to drive fast through all the swerving mountain roads.  He survived although his new diesel truck almost didn't.  Apparently we all learned that diesels have a sweet spot of fuel efficiency, and we weren't in it.  But that's later...

We stopped at one of the trail-heads to try hiking.  I figured the fresh air might help my sis.  Haha, here I thought I'm in the best shape of my life, and I could barely make it 100 feet up the trail.  The altitude almost killed me since I live at 3 feet above sea level and this was close to 9000.  My leg muscles never got sore, but omg, I couldn't catch my breath.  Needless to say, I was happy to stop and rest and just enjoy the beauty.  We talked for a bit and munched some beef jerky, and she encouraged us to go hiking and she'd wait for us.  Neither my bro nor I wanted to leave her, so we just ambled a little bit (which was about as fast as I could go anyway without oxygen).  And, she's stubborn so she pushed herself a bit to keep up.  The fresh air (and meds) did help a bit.  We maybe only ended up a quarter mile up the trail before we turned around, but some of that was over 45 degrees steep.

We continued to the top of Mt. Lemmon to get a bite at the little town.  At that point, my brother realized that his truck burned through way more diesel than it should have and we were in danger of running out.  When I say little town, I mean one store and one cafe (which was closed, the fkrs), and no gas station.  So, we tried to coast down, without going too fast so my sis and I wouldn't get carsick lol.  It was a harrowing ride down watching the Distance to Empty gauge count down until it just read out Lo Fuel.  We barely made it to the gas station and were happy when they had diesel there and we could refuel.

Saturday, May 26, 2007

We stayed up sooo late talking when we got back to his house.  And we met his new doggie, Bella, who is fkn adorable.  She's a Sicilian Mastiff and the most adorable one ever!  So, of course her aunties had to spoil her and play with all of her toys.  =D  I'm really glad she turned out well as I was the one who talked him into getting her.  She was a rescue puppy that he learned about just when his Tibetan Mastiff died.  He had just moved across the country and wasn't sure he was ready for a new dog.  Once he showed me her picture, I knew she needed him almost as much as he needed her.

I woke up early cuz I was still on EDT, so I had about 3-4 hours of sleep.  I tried to be quiet while everyone else was sleeping, but my quest for food woke up my sis.  She mumbled something barely intelligible like "you'd better be making coffee," so I started a pot for her.

We all sat around most of the morning catching up and chatting (and playing with Bella!).  By the time we decided we wanted to do something, half the day was gone, so we spent an hour or so at the Botanical Gardens before they closed.  Then it was off to Trader Joe's to get some food.  We don't have those in Florida, so it was a treat for both my brother and me, although now that he lives there, I'm sure he'll be there often.  My sis cooked us up some yummy, healthy food back at his house,  and again we stayed up all night talking.  :)

My connecting flight to Dallas was 90 minutes late.  Fortunately, we made up time in the air, so I had a leisurely 15 minutes to catch my next flight.  Unfortunately, we burned up that 15 minutes sitting within 10 feet of the gate.  Well, I needed the exercise since I was missing my Friday night class at the dojo.  :)

I texted my sister, who was also connecting to that flight, that she needed to hold the plane cuz I was running for it!  The airlines told me they wouldn't hold it and since it was the last flight of the night, I might get stuck in Dallas the whole sold-out holiday weekend.  Cheerful pessimists they were. ;)  I knew how my sister is and I knew I'm in pretty good shape with a damn nice wheeled carry-on.  It never tipped!  Thanks, my friend, for letting me borrow it and thanks also to Delsey for designing it.  So I ran like a spider monkey hopped up on Mountain Dew.  Of course my next gate was in a completely different terminal.

My sister is a smart cookie and started chatting to anyone who would listen; and somehow she got lots of people caring if her little sister whom she hadn't seen in 2 years would make the plane.   Laugh, she was the last person in line to board and yelled my name when she saw me running.  I came tearing over, and the flight attendant was very nonplussed.  He made some comment to my sis like why'd you make a federal case out of this.  :p  Of course, when I actually walked onto the plane behind my sis, almost everyone cheered to see I had made it.  And, because she's an amazing sister, she had snacks ready for me!!  =))  I had assumed I would have 90 minutes in Dallas to grab a a bite to eat.

She called my brother from our seats to let him know I had made the plane, and he picked us up with a huge smile at the Tucson airport.  :)

Know what I hate?  That I can't reserve airline tickets anymore for 24 hours.  Fuck you, Delta!  And, I also hate that the price is the same every single day until the day I'm ready to purchase them.  Fuck you, Delta!  And, checking a seating map indicates that there are plenty of available seats so there really isn't a reason to raise the price $200.  Fuck you, Delta!  Turns out Continental is $30 more than the original price, so I may fly them.  Fuck you, Delta!

FFS, it's time to whine again.  I don't think I've met my quota this month.  Guess what?  Yup, you were right.  I have another un-ending migraine.  I even threw a PityParty, but the clowns didn't help this time.  It might be time to search out and count my blessings.  It definitely is Imitrex time again.  :(

Tuesday. May 22. 2007

Galahad and I tried to go see Spiderman 3 this weekend, but fate decided otherwise.  A few of us met up for dinner before the movie, and during dinner one friend started having intense abdominal pain.  It got so bad that she insisted we take her to the hospital.  Since she isn't even close to being a hypochondriac, we got our food to go, refunded the movie tickets, and sped over to the closest hospital.  While we waited in the ER, we met this group of kids who had rushed over after a pool accident.  They were all still in their wet swimsuits and mismatched clothes.  One girl had a giant gash on her chin.  They were chatting amongst themselves and soon we joined in and made her laugh.  Others in the waiting room started feeling more comfortable and joined the conversation, too.  It was a nice tension release.  In the back of my mind, I wondered if anyone there was waiting for awful news on a loved one.  I hoped that we helped distract them if even temporarily.

After she got settled in her room (who knew ERs had private rooms?), we joined her and tried to keep her spirits up.  I know all too well what it's like to be in so much pain, you need to vomit.  Poor girl.  I held her hair while she threw up.  We quickly persuaded the nurses to up her painkillers instead of waiting to see if what they gave her worked.  Pretty soon, we were having a party in her room.  We had us plus a few staff members laughing away at dumb jokes and her ratty socks.  :p  She told me later that she went home and threw her socks away.  ;)  Somehow no one cared that her underwear was brand new.  We just teased her about her socks.  The P.A. told me that she had never seen someone in that much pain laugh before.  Welcome to my world.  Laughter doesn't make the pain go away, but it helps to distract for a split second here & there.

In hindsight I bet they were glad they gave us a room instead of one of the curtained-off areas because of how loud we were.  I absentmindedly wondered if our laughter helped anyone else or offended them because of the gravity of their loved one's condition.  Galahad played around with all of the gadgets and supplies in the room and asked the nurse where the bar was in the hospital.  Haha, she was great and said in her locker!

Anyway, my friend finally passed her stone and was medicated enough to be released.  I'm sure we'll talk about & remember this night far better than if we had gone to see Spiderman.  Sigh.  But I still want to see Spidey!

Yay, my neighbor is moving out.  He's actually not that bad usually, but he has his moments of passing out with his stereo blasting in the wee hours of the night.  I've had to go over there and pound on his door with my shoe for over 15 minutes to wake him.  At first I thought he was dead.  I am nervous about who might buy it though.  I hope they won't be worse.

So, umm.... happy new year?  :p  Yeah, it's been a while.  I haven't felt much like sharing or coming out from my Hall of Solitude.  Today's a new day and all that.  I've had a migraine for a few days now, actually over a week although I had a day off in the middle so I suppose it doesn't count.  It's not even a particularly bad one.  It's just been days, and I'm starting to lose my grasp on sanity.  Last night, I decided I was gonna go on a bender and get drunk and pass out.  I grabbed Galahad's bottle of Vodka and retreated into my library.  I sat on the couch and drank straight from the bottle.  Twice.  Omg, that stuff is vile.  How do people get drunk?  I staggered back downstairs and put the bottle back.  That didn't exactly help my head as you might imagine.  Plus, at that point I didn't want to mix Imitrex with that, so I made myself wait a few hours to take a dose.  To keep myself busy, I threw myself a Prodigious Pity Party -- clowns and all!

Kitten finally did her kitten job and came to snuggle.  That helped put a smile on my face.  So anyway, today I look like a mongoloid.  Thank goodness for creative eyelinering.  ;)

By the way, don't you hate when you get 9 million free address labels in the mail.  Who even sends mail anymore and needs to use them?  I especially hate when it's from an environmental charity --- although most charities are on my shit-list lately.
